At this month's edition of Brain Frame, the "performance comix [sic] reading series" curated and emceed by 2014 People Issue person Lyra Hill, readers conjure "lovestruck phantoms, petite mystics, shapeshifting strongmen, K-pop, stand-up and conceptual pictionary experiments" to challenge traditional comics and their conventions. Join in on the fun at Constellation.
Art Spiegelman, in addition to being one of the greatest geniuses in comics (just read Maus already!), is also a historian of the form. In Wordless!, he's collaborated with jazz composer Phillip Johnston to present the work of Frans Masereel, Si Lewen, and three other artists whose graphic novels are totally, um, wordless. See it at Logan Center for the Arts.
In "The Production Line of Happiness," photographer Christopher Williams critiques the conventions of commercial images and photojournalism. See the exhibit at Art Institute of Chicago.
