Restaurant Details

The el rolls by above, and Lake Street is its still-gritty self; inside, however, a calm, modernist dining room awaited us. The substantial menu samples cuisines from Thailand, Laos, India, and Japan in addition to pan-Asian and noodle dishes—it's not an easy matter to choose. We started with appetizers: roti canai with chicken in a nuanced curry sauce and Indian calamari, also with a curry sauce we cross-dipped with favorable results. A seafood-stocked Volcano soup was reminiscent of lobster bisque but lighter and fresher due to the coconut milk. We also tried the Anna's Favorites Sampler: a samosa in an eggroll wrapper, a scallop nestled in a salsa with exquisitely ripe mango (how is that possible in December?), and a coconut-cream dip we all fell in love with. Nam sod, a punchy progression into more traditional Thai, was outstanding, with superfresh ingredients and balanced spice; the Ocean Drive, a chef's signature sushi roll, was similarly impressive—and generously portioned.
