When: Sat., Feb. 8, 8 p.m. 2014
Beloved local guitarist Mat Arluck lost a battle with cancer on Thanksgiving Day 2009, and the first public tribute to his memory happened at the Beat Kitchen on February 4, 2010—what would’ve been his 40th birthday. The show’s bill included bands Arluck had played in (posthardcore stalwarts Sweet Cobra, glammy bizarro rockers Cooler by the Lake) or whose members were his close friends (skate punks the Party Downers). The second edition, two years later, featured not just live music but also two releases: a limited-edition DVD of the first year’s show and a CD compilation of studio recordings by Arluck’s bands. Tonight is the third Arluck Time (the plan is to celebrate every two years), and it doesn’t mess with the formula: get a bunch of Mat’s friends together under one roof, listen to loud music, drink a beer or three, and have a fucking time honoring him. All the aforementioned bands return, joined by Gary Numan cover band Gnuman and hardcore-punk outfit Full On. The show will also be your first chance to pick up a new split seven-inch from Sweet Cobra and their friends Get Rad; according to Sweet Cobra drummer Jason Gagovski, their side features music inspired by or composed by Arluck, including “Old Haunts,” which uses guitar parts he showed the band prior to his death and lyrics he wrote after his illness forced him to return home to Seattle. —Kevin Warwick Gnuman headlines; Sweet Cobra, Party Downers, Full On, and Cooler by the Lake open.
