Assassins Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 10 2012

The killers of Abraham Lincoln, John Kennedy, James Garfield, and William McKinley—as well as five other men and women who missed their presidential targets—perform a vaudeville-style revue in this 1990 musical by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman. Spot-on pastiches of popular music and cheerfully dark sketches explore the seedy underbelly of the national mythology, the assassins' obsessions and delusions presented as warped versions of the American dream. The enterprise requires a degree of irony entirely absent from Billy Pacholski's gung-ho production. Set in front of Frank Mares's too-literal projections (John Hinckley Jr. mentions Jodie Foster and, sure enough, her face pops up), the cast look way too earnest and wholesome to pass as desperate psychos. —Zac Thompson

Price: $45; $100 on election night
