Best (and Most Vocal) Mime

Dean Evans

Critics' Picks

Discovering you're at a show that involves audience participation can provoke a state of anxiety comparable to being pushed onstage at a karaoke bar. Dean Evans's alter ego revels in that. The ex-Neo-Futurist and artistic director of Chicago Physical Theater has been studying and performing mime and bouffon in the city for years, but he might've hit his stride last summer at Collaboraction's Sketchbook: Reincarnate festival. Evans's hour-long performance there as Honeybuns, a meddling, misshapen talking mime, was an organic, quintessential storefront experience that invited audience members to step outside their comfort zones. His heartfelt plea that they carry that openness away from the theater was touching; his literal take-it-to-the-streets illustration was nothing short of a gift.
