At the Glenwood Sunday Market volunteers carry a tape measure to show dog owners that a two-foot leash is the best way to walk their dogs through the crowded Rogers Park market, and posted signs suggest that dogs stay at least six feet away from the nearly two dozen vendors selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, honey, cheese, meat, and baked goods, among other things. The city of Chicago doesn't have a dog ordinance for outdoor markets (Evanston does), but the privately run market is watching out for food—and shoppers'—safety. Glenwood also has an eye toward the environment: for "Project Plarn" volunteers cut plastic bags into strips and crochet them into reusable market bags that are available for purchase. Glenwood Sunday Market also has a purchasing program that accepts Visa, Mastercard, LINK, and SNAP cards. —Vera Videnovich
