East Asian Imports at AMC River East 21

Critics' Picks

With next to no publicity, AMC's River East 21 multiplex regularly screens mainstream hits from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong—which, oddly, makes it one of the best-kept secrets in Chicago moviegoing. This spring the diverse selections included Taiwanese historical epic Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale, Hong Kong romantic comedy Love in the Buff, and a domestic drama, A Simple Life by master director Ann Hui (Boat People), also from Hong Kong. All three are emotionally satisfying entertainments that probably would've garnered much bigger audiences had they received some press. Now that Chinese theater operator the Wanda Group has acquired AMC Entertainment, you can expect River East to present even more Asian films, though there's been no word yet on whether the theater will make any greater effort to promote them.
