Well, if Bill Cunningham isn't the first of his kind, he's certainly one of the first. The New York Times' fashion-snapping man on the street is so intriguing that not only did the New Yorker do a profile on him a year ago, now there's a documentary, Bill Cunningham New York. Unfortunately there are no plans at this time for a Chicago screening, according to producer Philip Gefter, but they are working toward a national release, "fingers crossed."

The New Yorker article, which described his modest rooms sans private bath, accurately described him as "an oblate—a layperson who has dedicated his life to the tribe without becoming a part of it." In a world where everyone is vying for attention, he's focused on everyone but himself.
