Philadelphia Inquirer, August 26, 1904. Further to yesterday's post about the unexampled human strife that once beset the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. No, I don't mean that little dust-up during the Civil War; I mean George Hilterbrick's law suit against his neighbor Ezra Mehring over the latter's theft of a slice of hot mince pie.

Was justice done here? It'd be hard to say without reference to the depositions from the citizenry of Littlestown, which in all probability have not survived. The crux of the case arguably stands on Mrs. Hilterbrick's abilities as a piemaker. We may just never know.
