The Trib reports that 11 teenagers were arrested after trying to steal stuff from North Face, Armani, and Filene's Basement: "The employees of the stores said the large group of teens ran into the stores and grabbed items from the store shelves and ran off with them without paying, police said."

What could the teens have done to achieve more successful results?

  • Instead of traveling in a big group, they could have broken up into smaller, more inconspicuous groups or pairs.

  • They shouldn't have run into the stores, because running attracts attention. Causing a commotion, while exciting, rarely wins the hearts and minds of shopkeepers—who, it merits noting, usually don't endorse shoplifting for philosophical reasons.

  • They probably should have assumed that the shopkeepers were going to call the police as soon as they detected shoplifting activity.

  • They should not have assumed that they could outrun cop cars.

Kids, don't shoplift! It's a crime. But if you insist, then don't underestimate the importance of strategic planning.
