The first details about this year's Chicago Jazz Festival, which runs September 1-4, have been released by the city. Once again the event takes place at several venues: the Chicago Cultural Center (Thursday), Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park (Thursday and Friday), and multiple stages in Grant Park (Saturday and Sunday).

This year's artist-in-residence is trumpeter Orbert Davis, who will perform several times, including a Saturday show where the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble will premiere a new Davis piece. Previously announced as part of the Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz series at Pritzker is the concert Thursday, September 1, by pianist Randy Weston and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble; they'll play the brilliant arrangements of Weston's compositions by the great Melba Liston. Other announced performers include the Saxophone Summit (reedists Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, and Ravi Coltrane with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Billy Hart) playing Pritzker on Friday night, innovative singer Cassandra Wilson headlining the Petrillo Music Shell on Saturday, and trumpeter Roy Hargrove headlining the same stage on Sunday.
