12 O'Clock Track: Nails' "Wide Open Wound," hate-fueled hardcore

Wallowing in the doldrums of the winter—in which the bitter cold persists but the increasing light of day teases you like a true asshole—can be a painful existence. How fortunate I've been recently to really only care about the release of the new Nails album, the aptly titled Abandon All Life. A mix of hardcore, grindcore, and utter disdain for the existence of everything, the album comes out through Southern Lord on March 19. It's the best thing I've heard this year from a label that very rarely ever makes a misstep, annihilating the band's 2010 debut, Unsilent Death.

Today's 12 O'Clock Track is the most recent song to leak, "Wide Open Wound." While the band often goes the route of the insane, frenzied blast beat, this track is hardcore at its roots, relying on maniacal vocal distortion and a bludgeoning, massive guitar riff to make your already cold heart even more frigid and spiteful.
