Or should I make a wish that ghosts walk? Maybe then Chicago could start working on another Latino-focused contemporary dance company with a national and even international reputation.

Two weeks ago, LNDT administrators said that the company was restructuring and that artistic director Gustavo Ramirez Sansano and dancers Monica Cervantes and Eduardo Zuñiga had all either left or were about to leave. Today, LNDT announced that, after 15 years, it's closing up shop. As board president Jorge Solis put it, "The financial reality could not be avoided any longer."

You can't just get a new puppy and expect not to mourn your companion of 15 years. Likewise, no dance company is truly replaceable. I'll miss Sansano's daring and sense of fun, his antic invention and turbocharged movement, the dancers' expertise and full commitment. Still, I hope that another Latin/contemporary troupe takes root here. With a Hispanic population approaching one-third of Chicago's total, it just makes sense. Even financial sense.
