This weekend Chicago DJ Jesse de la Peña resuscitates the Blue Groove Lounge, the weekly hip-hop party he hosted till it folded in 2003, to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Originally held Mondays at the Elbo Room, it sometimes showcased stars as big as Missy Elliott and the Jungle Brothers; in 1998 de la Peña moved it to the Funky Buddha Lounge after complaints from the residents of new condos nearby. The weekend-long anniversary blowout begins Fri 12/6 at Double Door (Blue Groove Lounge's final home) with Roc Marciano and a lineup of locals that includes All Natural, Juice, Ang 13, and PNS. Then the party returns to the Elbo Room: the Sat 12/7 bill has Lili K, Kevin Coval, and more, while the Sun 12/8 lineup features the likes of Mental Giants and Mass Hysteria.

We're sad to say that Charalambos Papadopoulos—known to generations of Chicago musicians and fans as Bob Popp—died at 49 last week in Denver. (The cause has yet to be announced.) Beginning in the late 80s, the Oak Park native was a scene linchpin as a punk guitarist (maybe you remember Ballsniffer), live sound engineer, and co-owner of Gunpoint Recording Studios. Popp's family asks well-wishers to donate to KT's Kids, a charity that benefits Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital. On Sun 12/14 Liar's Club hosts its annual fund-raiser for KT's Kids, which features a set from the Nefarious Fat Cats, aka Jake Burns from Stiff Little Fingers, John Haggerty of Pegboy, Local H front man Scott Lucas, and others.

Bratty local bubblegum punks Swimsuit Addition observed Thanksgiving by releasing the EP Tanks! one song per day on Bandcamp. The lead track, "William Corgan, the Amazing Cat Lady!," celebrates the Great Pumpkin's love of felines with surf guitar, heaps of echo, and a goofy interview sample. All seven cuts will be online by Thu 12/11, when the band drops the EP on tape at the Emporium Arcade Bar in Wicker Park.
