Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius

Rated PG 113 minutes

Written and directed by Rowdy Herrington, this richly upholstered biopic (2004) of golf legend Bobby Jones faces one of the toughest sand traps imaginable: not only does it have to make golf exciting, it has to dramatize a man's interior struggle with his own seemingly limitless potential. As my grandfather used to say, that's a pretty high-class problem to have, and with a wall-to-wall sound track of Gaelic flutes and purring French horn, the movie keeps threatening to become a lesson in noblesse oblige. But Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ) gives a quietly focused performance in the title role, ably assisted by Brett Rice as Jones's father, Jeremy Northam as golf rival Walter Hagen, and Malcolm McDowell as sportswriter O.D. Keeler.
