Bonhoeffer

This documentary chronicles the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian who fought to awaken the Lutheran church to its duty to oppose the Nazis, and who died at Nazi hands after aiding a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler. Born into wealth and privilege, Bonhoeffer became radicalized after attending services at a black church in Harlem. Watching the rise of Nazism he developed a pragmatic moral doctrine that sanctioned the use of force in resisting evil. Director Martin Doblmeier draws on interviews with Bonhoeffer's relatives, colleagues, students, and posthumous followers (including Bishop Desmond Tutu). While informative, the film's solemn, PBS-ready mix of talking heads and archival footage provides more of a history lesson than an intimate portrait. In English and subtitled German. 90 min.
