Caddyshack

Rated R 98 minutes 1980

Like Meatballs, this 1980 film is Animal House scaled down to a kiddie movie: the teenage hero (Michael O'Keefe) decides to brownnose his way to his country club's caddy scholarship and faces some heavy choices—whether to fight the establishment or join it, whether to sleep with bad girls or marry a nice one. Role models are provided by a strangely mixed supporting cast of name comics (Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Bill Murray). The first-time director, Harold Ramis, can't hold it together: the picture lurches from style to style (including some ill-placed whimsy with a gopher puppet) and collapses somewhere between sitcom and sketch farce. Male bonding remains the highest value of the Animal House comedies: women are trashed with a fierceness out of Mickey Spillane.
