Cam'ron Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Sun., Feb. 10, 8:30 p.m. 2013

Around the turn of the millennium, when Cameron Giles was ascending to the top of the rap world, he caught flak from all sides. Hip-hop heads lobbying for the genre’s status as a serious art form blasted him for his simplistic rhyme schemes—including an infamous tendency to rhyme a word with itself—and even critics who actually liked him were put off by his promotion of the “no homo” meme. Street fans were scandalized by his personal style, which for a while involved fur coats dyed pink and SUVs painted to match. And Bill O’Reilly hated on him because Bill O’Reilly was, of course, mad. Fast forward ten years, and pushing the sartorial envelope has become the norm; the majority of devoted hip-hop fans don’t get angry at a rapper for using basic rhyme schemes, as long as it’s done with panache; and Cam’ron, once a walking punch line, has started to look more like a visionary. He’s spent the past few years in the mixtape wilderness, but last April he turned up on “I Am Your Leader” by Nicki Minaj—who’s obviously learned a thing or two from him—and his don’t-give-a-fuck charm felt just as fresh as it did when “Oh Boy” dominated the radio more than ten years ago. —Miles Raymer
