Political sex scandals erupt so frequently and evaporate so quickly that we tend to file them away in the bulging folder of American hypocrisy and forget, but the brilliant muckraker Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room
, Casino Jack and the United States of Money
) refuses to let go of the "Love Guv" fracas that brought down New York governor Eliot Spitzer. This probing documentary revisits Spitzer's illicit rendezvous with high-priced call girls, which became tabloid fodder and instantly drove him from office in 2008. It also recounts his fierce crusade against the excesses of Wall Street, first as attorney general and then as governor, and speculates that the FBI probe uncovering his sexual escapades may have been engineered by some of the financial titans he targeted. Gibney never unravels that mystery, but in the end it's dwarfed by the mystery of Spitzer himself, a maze of political idealism, professional ruthlessness, and spiritual crisis.
