Coping, CSTVT, Noumenon, Dowsing, Like Bats 17+ Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Dec. 22, 8:30 p.m. 2012

Local emo four-piece Coping announced in May that they were breaking up—guitarist Tyler Janssen has moved back to California for school—and this is not only their first show since then but also their last. It's even more bittersweet an occasion because they're celebrating the release of their first LP, Nope (Protagonist). The guys in Coping are pretty familiar with "bittersweet," though, having spent a couple years perfecting a scrappy, jumpy punk sound that accentuates uplifting moments in dour songs (and dour moments in uplifting songs). Their ragged, endearing style combines chimelike guitar riffs with spastic, booming drum fills and vocals that turn on a dime from yelps or three-part harmonies to throaty screams. The melancholy melodies of "Everything No Problem" and "Knuckle Punk" don't end up sounding melodramatic, despite the songs' lyrics about twentysomething frustration and restlessness—the surging arrangements and brisk tempos provide a glimmer of positivity. It's a shame that Coping won't be around to build on the strengths of Nope, but a couple members are already playing in other groups (such as Torture Love and Scoundrel), so the band's spirit should live on. And at any rate the material from Nope will be a perfect fit for the mood of the show. —Leor Galil CSTVT, Noumenon, Dowsing, and Like Bats open.
