Crossed Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 18 2012

Devised and performed by all-Latina Teatro Luna, Crossed explores the experiences of immigrants in the U.S. through a series of graceful, poignant vignettes. The show tackles tensions among immigrant groups ("Just because you came here on a plane doesn't make you better than me") as well as stereotypes ("I do not want any collard greens," declares a black French immigrant). It's serious stuff, but humor lightens the mood considerably. Some pieces involve song and dance, and, in an ongoing gag, a disembodied female voice sends up airport PA announcements, putting passengers through game-show-style quizzes. In one of the funniest scenes, two older Latinas explain that they're going to visit China because "those people are taking over the world," and the pair want to learn more about the culture than they can pick up at their local Chinese buffet. —Julia Thiel
