Depeche Mode, Bat for Lashes Early Warnings (Music) Member Picks Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Sat., Aug. 24, 7:30 p.m. 2013

On last year’s The Haunted Man (Capitol), London singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Natasha Khan, who makes music as Bat for Lashes, brought concision to her ethereal art-pop, reining in the fussiness and bombast of her first two albums without dousing the fireworks. Kate Bush and Bjork remain key touchstones, but Khan's music is more direct and accessible (if a bit lighter), both candid and arrestingly beautiful. On "All Your Gold," she struggles to protect a good relationship from the negative aftereffects of a bad one: "’Cause you’re a good man / I keep telling myself to just let go." Elsewhere she celebrates a best friend as a "superstar" ("Laura"), embraces a breakup as a liberation ("Oh Yeah"), and dresses up in front of her bedroom mirror like Marilyn Monroe ("Marilyn"). I could do without some of Khan's vocal tics—sometimes her wispy cries drive me nuts—but her prodigious focus and craft would excuse far worse. —Peter Margasak
