Ever since former Karate front man Geoff Farina (also of Secret Stars and Glorytellers) arrived in Chicago in 2010, the dude has had a full dance card—right now his regular gigs include acoustic duo the Last Kind Words, weekly Friday sets of steel-string guitar at the Whistler (solo or with friends), and a job teaching classes on American roots music at DePaul. Gossip Wolf is particularly excited for his new power trio, Exit Verse, who released their self-titled debut via Ernest Jenning Record Co. on Mon 11/17. The album is sorta indie rock and sorta pop punk, and it features bassist Pete Croke (Brokeback, Tight Phantomz) and drummer John Dugan (Chisel, Chicago Stone Lightning Band), who's since been replaced behind the kit by Chris Dye (Speck Mountain, Chin Up Chin Up). Exit Verse will wrap up an upcoming east-coast tour on Mon 12/15 at the Empty Bottle.

Last week Chicago mashup masters the Hood Internet scored a viral hit with a demonically catchy blend of Kendrick Lamar's "Backseat Freestyle" and Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off"—Time even gave the DJ duo daps, for goodness' sake! After that coup, the Hoodies have decided to treat themselves—they're teaming up with Brooklyn bakery Ovenly for a free party at the Hideout on Sat 11/22 called Cookies: Stories About, Music for, and the Eating of Everyone's Most Favorite Treat. Along with readings from Nick Ward, Lindsay Hunter, Molly Each, and Jonathan Messinger (and cookies, of course) the bash will feature a cookie-themed Hood Internet DJ set.

Due to a pressing-plant mistake, Chicago's Forgotten Species (with Blake Smith of Fig Dish and Caviar) won't have copies of their new EP, Hades Fades (Long Nights Impossible Odds), at their release show at Schubas on Sat 11/22. But we're excited to hear the shoegazery quartet's catchy jams—"Heavy Light" sounds like the Psychedelic Furs, except more brooding (if that's even possible).
