Gossamer Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Thursdays, Saturdays. Continues through Dec. 17 2009

The strongest children's plays explain through wonder. A powerful parable of healing, Lois Lowry's 90-minute adaptation of her own novella centers on an abused boy who finds himself torn between the benevolent Dream-Givers--who want to trigger his few happy memories in order to maintain hope--and the Sinisteeds, who specialize in nightmares. (It's Monsters, Inc., played for higher stakes.) Brian Bell's perfectly illustrated staging combines character-creating costumes, scary puppets, and a set that, well, sets off the action in every sense. Elizabeth Birkenmeier as a novice Dream-Giver and Victoria Abram-Copenhaver as the messed-up kid are everything they should be every moment they're onstage. A dream show indeed. --Lawrence Bommer
