Hamid Drake & Michael Zerang Agenda All Ages Early Warnings (Music) Member Picks Recommended

When: Fri., Dec. 21, 6 a.m., Sat., Dec. 22, 6 a.m. and Sun., Dec. 23, 6 a.m. 2012

Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake are both Chicago percussionists, but it's not always easy to see them play here. They are, after all, world-class musicians, and their itineraries can take them out of town (or overseas) for months at a stretch. But every winter since 1990 they've come back to play ceremonial sunrise concerts to celebrate the solstice. (In years past they also had shows at sunset.) Each begins in the predawn dark, with the two men playing in a room lit only by candles on the floor; each ends when the sun comes through the windows, signaling the end of the music and ushering in a silence that invites the audience to meditate on the joys and trials of the past year and look forward to the year to come. But what happens in between is wide open; Drake and Zerang are both master improvisers steeped in the percussion music of Africa and Asia as well as in jazz, and each brings a collection of hand drums from around the world as well as a trap kit.
