The former Chalkboard, now serving southern-influenced breakfast, lunch, and brunch.

Restaurant Details

A reinvention of Chalkboard, Homegrown Cafe has changed its concept and hours while keeping the same casual, homey atmosphere. Chef-owner Gilbert Langlois's menu is brief but well executed, offering popular southern-inflected dishes such as chicken and waffles and biscuits and gravy. I can't say I've ever really understood the former: I like both components separately, and the chicken here was beautifully fried, moist on the inside and crispy on the outside, yet somehow the whole seemed like less than the sum of its parts. The biscuits and gravy, on the other hand, I had no trouble appreciating, the light, slightly crunchy buttermilk biscuits great for sopping up the maximum amount of sausage gravy. Sides were perfectly fine, though I was surprised that hash browns turned out to be roasted chunks of potato and sweet potato rather than the shredded and fried potatoes I was expecting. Portion sizes are generous—there must have been half a chicken on the chicken and waffles—and prices are reasonable; almost all the main dishes are $8-$10 (the chicken and waffles, at $12, is the most expensive).
