From the producers and one of the writers of the Underworld franchise comes another everything-but-the-kitchen-sink horror fantasy, which piles on so many pulpy conceits that you might be carried along by the sheer excess. Sometime in the near future, Frankenstein's monster (Aaron Eckhart)—reimagined here as superhuman and immortal—joins the ranks of a gargoyle army to battle evil demons who want to exterminate mankind. This novel premise quickly gives way to lots of chaotic action, though there are numerous incidental pleasures throughout. The filmmakers devise some impressive 3-D imagery around the gothic-style settings; Miranda Otto and Bill Nighy (as the respective leaders of the gargoyles and demons) are clearly having a good time slumming. Stuart Beattie directed.
