While many of their contemporaries go on and on (and on and on) about their recreational molly habits, Brooklyn duo the the Underachievers are on a whole other trip. They rap about harder psychedelics, and they’re not just taking them to make the VIP section more interesting. Their mixtape Indigoism, released in February, is dense with lysergically heavy imagery and enough arcane mystical talk to put them in the running with Lil B for the title of Young Rap Act Most Likely to Start an Actual Cult. Issa Dash and Ak are aligned with the retro-leaning Beast Coast crew led by NYC rapper Joey Bada$$ as well as with the trippy Brainfeeder label, but they followed up Indigoism with Lords of Flatbush, an EP whose producer, Lex Luger, is responsible for much of the way rap music sounds right now, thanks to massive collaborations with Rick Ross and Kanye. The duo navigate his epic-size beats with aplomb and prove along the way that they’re more than capable of doing pop-chart stuff—it’s just less satisfying than when they let their freak flags fly. —Miles Raymer Joey Bada$$ & Pro Era headline; Ab-Soul, the Underachievers, Chevy Woods, and Statik Selektah open.
