Though "Kool" Keith Thornton has inhabited a multitude of personalities over the course of his 25-year career—sex-obsessed doctor, sex-obsessed alien, sex-obsessed rock star—they all share a flow whose apparent casual disregard for his words' rhythmic and tonal context actually masks a primally deep understanding of it, making him something like the Miles Davis of rap music. This idiosyncratic talent and Thornton's willingness to embrace the weirdest and most socially unacceptable aspects of his personality have made him an icon among the new wave of punkish rappers led by the likes of Tyler, the Creator and Spaceghostpurrp. His later career has been marred by dealings with marginal labels and marginal collaborators, which have resulted in a string of ineffectual albums. But the several dozen killer LPs he's created more than outweigh them. —Miles Raymer Sharkula, Luck of the Draw, and Sam I Am the MC.
