Local duo Laughing Eye Weeping Eye play buzzing, ancient-sounding tunes whose stately harmonies and compelling drones remind this wolf of Dead Can Dance and Nico. It can't hurt that singer and harmonium pumper Rebecca Schoenecker is also a tarot reader—she can definitely cast musical spells, especially with help from the band's other half, Patrick Holbrook, whose arsenal of stringed instruments includes Turkish spike fiddle and ukelin. The video for "Earth," from their new cassette, Once Was You, features daggers, robes, and eerily beautiful forest scenery. The tape dropped Mon 8/24 via Oakland label Moon Glyph, and Laughing Eye Weeping Eye celebrate its release Sat 8/29 at Cafe Mustache (as soon as they finish a short east-coast tour).
Guitarist John Becker tells Gossip Wolf that he recently left Vukari, named "Best Black-Metal Studio Project to Hit the Stage" in the Reader's 2014 Best of Chicago issue; between his other musical projects and his full-time job, he was overbooked. Luckily for concerned listeners, that's the only group Becker quit: his atmospheric metal band, Austaras, just finished an album, and his dark-pop project, Vaskula, plays Martyrs' on Thu 8/27.
Fans of on-point electronic music should already be into Nite Owl Diner, a local label run by producers Alex Burkat (aka 100% Silk or Mister Saturday Night) and Chris Shively (aka Chrissy or Chris E Pants and formerly Chrissy Murderbot). You can't order a blue-plate special from these folks, but as of Thu 8/27 you can dig into The Nite Owl Buffet Vol. 1, the label's first comp—it features Burkat, Savile & JKnochel, Ali Berger, and Olin (aka new Smart Bar talent buyer Jason Garden). v
