Formerly called Leadbelly, this blues-themed burger place featuring house-ground meat, hand-cut fries, and made-from-scratch buns, plus shakes and craft beer.
Formerly named Leadbelly after the singer of old-time down-and-dirty blues, this restaurant has an interior that looks like a down-and-dirty blues bar, just one that looks pretty clean. The walls are covered with pristinely framed black-and-white photos of rock stars from Chuck Berry to Kurt Cobain, there's a quartet of flat-screen TVs showing concert footage from Creedence Clearwater Revival and U2, and there's a glass cabinet filled with commemorative T-shirts where the cigarette machine ought to be. Leadbelly specializes in burgers piled so high with bacon and cheese and an alarming array of house-made condiments that you wonder how you'll be able to open your mouth wide enough to take a bite. They’re delicious, though, juicy with a tinge of spiciness; even odd combinations such as the Gallows Pole—with caramelized mushrooms and onions, smashed taters, Swiss cheese, and bearnaise sauce—work surprisingly well. It's about as authentic a juke joint as Kuma's Corner is a biker bar, but like Kuma's, it might be, in the immortal words of U2, "even better than the real thing."
