Margaret Sullavan was never more magical in the movies than she was in the films of Frank Borzage. This 1934 melodrama, set in a postwar Germany where the economy is crumbling and Hitler is on the rise, was their first collaboration, as well as one of the first Hollywood films to attack the Nazis. As Andrew Sarris has observed, Borzage's objections to Hitler were more emotional than political: fascism threatened the private worlds of his lovers, represented here by Sullavan's search for a home, however small, for her husband and herself.
