Me and Orson Welles

Rated PG-13 114 minutes 2009

Surely the great filmmaker would have gotten a rueful chuckle from the fact that he's been a character in almost as many movies (including RKO 281, Cradle Will Rock, Ed Wood, and Heavenly Creatures) as he was ever permitted to direct. Set in 1937, this engaging period drama by Richard Linklater focuses on Welles's legendary Mercury Theatre production of Julius Caesar, which transplanted Shakespeare's play to fascist Italy. Christian McKay pulls off an uncanny impersonation of the imperious Welles, though the story revolves around a fictional teenager (High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron) who manages to win a small role in the play and gets a bitter lesson in the power of ego and the prerogatives of genius. With Claire Danes, Zoe Kazan, Eddie Marsan (as John Houseman), and James Tupper (as Joseph Cotten).
