Re: “Darkness, Foxy Shazam

★★★★★ ★★★★★

This triple-bill was great...Crown Jewel Defense, Foxy Shazam, and The Darkness. For this "Sold Out" show, Chicago fans packed in early for the show which gave the opening band (Crown Jewel Defense ("CJD")) and lot of energy. While the crowd did not seem to know CJD's music, they enthusiastically produced high-engery, slightly-campy, guitar rock.

Next, Foxy Shazam, supporting their new album, The Church of Rock and Roll, did what they do best...entertain with their stage presence and music (peppered with singer-Eric Nally's off-kilter stage banter). They used to self-describe their music on a T-shirt as "White Music for Black People." Their high-energy show, quirky band members, and sold songwriting is reminiscent of the terrific Detroit-based band, that is now no longer around...the Trash Brats, who consistently produced some of the best concerts, even under the worst venue conditions.

Finally, The Darkness. Their set list was tight with a well-rounded set. It's certainly nice to see them re-grouped and, again, wearing the crown for the "Kings of Cock Rock".

When any of these bands make their way back to Chicago, don't miss them. It's well-spent entertainment dollars.

Travis and Sir WJ was hands down the best showmen of the night. King Louie was dope too! Sir WJ had an orchestra! NEVER heard an orchestra do hip-hop!

This concert was EPIC! Travis Scott climbed the rafters and threw water on the DJ board. Sir WJ was awesome!!!!!! I love Sir WJ's sound! Who thinks to put horns and jazz to hip hop!? The costumes and masks were a genius touch! What a great performance and concert all around. I would definitely go see it again!!!!

Wait a minute...the show I paid way in advance to see around ninish is now pushed to midnight due to some last minute pill up of other shows? Not only this is insulting for the groups that were scheduled to perform on a Friday night at a reasonable hour but a bunch of people will end up commuting back home at 2 in the morning. Not cool Metro...

Re: “Lord Huron, Night Moves

I've seen many an excellent show at the Metro in my time, but, that all changed when I saw Lord Huron just suck terribly. I am sure that some/many folks out there had a stellar evening, but, not this guy. The Metro has their stuff together, sound is never the issue. Unfortunately this band cannot reproduce the highly polished sound that is manufactured in the studio for them. Call me a hater. Maybe I am. This show lacked the energy that a group needs to deserve to play at the legendary Metro; take this garbage to Lincoln Hall. I went in with the hopes that I would be blown away by their live show, as much as I was by their album, instead, I found out they are just another band with a front man who occasionally plays a single drum and wears a fedora. Worst show I've ever seen. Lord Huron live = Fail

Re: “Cold Waves II: Prong, Iron Lung Corp, 16 Volt, Skrew, Hate Dept., Evil Mothers, Plague Bringer

Wow, an entire paragraph about the opening band and a brief mention of the bands that have been around since the 90's and actually played outside of Chicago.

I don't usually go to rap concerts, but I love Travis BArker! His performances are raw and high energy. Totally unpredictable!!! Usually the opening acts are really shitty but one that could actually have longevity in my music was this guy he calls himself black Sinatra. He had a live band with horn players, dancers, he wore a white tuxedo jacket, and really cared about showmanship and not about being cool. he is no Travis Barker but i can dig him.

Came to Chicago to experience Honey & the 45s on Jan. 11th -- excellent show in a good venue. Great crowd was happy, friendly and enjoying the vibe. Unfortunate sound issues covered the close harmonies, playful lyrics, and vocal interplay between Christina and Kim that make Honey & the 45s so unique.

Re: “Naked Raygun, the Arrivals, White Mystery, Acidic Tree

This NR show was a mere blip of what this band once was. No Haggerty and coming onstage to Rush and playing a Springsteen cover. It was embarrassing. The reason we listened to NR was because of bands like Rush. Everything is so calculated and slow. I'll keep my memories of NR when they blew minds and made records with passion.

The opener The Arrivals are where its at. Great tunes, great lyrics and done with passion....truly great rock n roll that needs to be heard.

The funny thing is, Willie Nelson was playing in Waukegan that same night and he remembered all of his lyrics. Oh Skat Amoeba!
