Needle drop, Tortoise style

Drummer John Herndon tattoos you. Plus: J2K of Flosstradamus eyes the door, and Chrissy Murderbot collects remixes of “Pop Yo Back.”

Tortoise nonmusic news! Drummer John Herndon has made a foray into tattooing. Since April he's been posting photos of his work (on friends and himself) at his blog, He applies his inimitable style to more than just typical tat-flash fare: recent pics feature a Devo energy dome, a bear eating a skull, a toucan spaceship, and a hot-rodding rat. Herndon was coy with Gossip Wolf about whether his new pursuit is a job or a hobby: "I actually don't know what I would call it." This Wolf is saving up big bucks for the sticksman to ink a full back piece of an overflowing Dumpster—yum! In other Tortoise news, a few weeks back guitarist Jeff Parker became a father twice over with the birth of his son, Ezra. Gossip Wolf sends a big furry congrats to the proud papa!

Josh Young has been DJing around town as Young Josh, but he's best known as J2K of the production duo Flosstradamus. Young has kept Floss half-local ever since his partner in crime, Curt Cameruci (aka DJ Autobot), set up shop in Brooklyn last fall, but Young is pondering a move too, either to NYC or LA. Chicago needs to step it up and stem the talent drain—Young's older sister, Melisa (aka Kid Sister), split for LA last year.

Local DJ, producer, and label honcho Chrissy Murderbot is preparing the second release for his bass-heavy dance-music imprint, Loose Squares. Pop Yo Back RMXS features five reimaginings of "Pop Yo Back" by Windy City footwork and juke practitioner DJ Lil'Tal. It's a floor filler! The EP includes tracks from UK bass-line ravers Squire of Gothos and Chicago moombahton-cumbia duo Sonido Rampage y Nader. It'll drop digitally Tue 9/20. In the meantime, Chrissy has a couple of local shows: on Thu 9/1 he'll hit up Berlin and on Thu 9/15 he'll open for Brooklyn producer Machinedrum at Smart Bar. —Jessica Hopper and J.R. Nelson
