On Sunday Lady Gaga hit Pitchfork for the second year running, this time to see M.I.A., but she escaped Gossip Wolf's keen eye. On Saturday we saw Devon Welsh and Matthew Otto of Majical Cloudz taking a stroll, as well as Disappears' Brian Case and White/Light's Matthew Hale Clark watching Metz; Sky Ferreira listened to Swans for maybe ten seconds before fleeing. On Sunday members of Treated Crew hung out in the VIP area after jumping onstage with DJ Rashad; Sally Timms, Damons Locks, and Major Taylor caught Killer Mike and El-P; former Das Racist MC Kool A.D. checked out the Based God; Rockie Fresh rolled through before appearing with TNGHT; and Peter Cottontale and Lili K. (who'd performed with Tree) danced to Kells as Save Money rapper Caleb James disappeared shirtless into the crowd.
A highlight of the HoZac Blackout in May was recently reunited power-pop group Pezband, who formed in Oak Park in the early 70s, recorded a few LPs of shimmery skinny-tie songs (including the classic "Baby It's Cold Outside"), and fizzled out in the Reagan years. At Ukrainian Village studio Pieholden Suite Sound they just cut the new "Fab Girlfriend" and a cover of Billy Boy Arnold's "I Wish You Would," made famous by the Yardbirds (and a longtime Pezband live staple). Pieholden's Robbie Hamilton says the band hopes to release these tunes (and more new material) ASAP.
Emily Cross of Cross Record (the Best Candidate to Be the Next Angel Olsen in the Reader's 2013 Best of Chicago issue) and Dan Duszynski of Any Kind are getting hitched next month! They're also moving to Austin at the end of the summer. If you didn't get a wedding invite, you can still help give them a proper send-off at their farewell show Sat 7/27 at Double Door. Any Kind's lovely indie-pop album Other is available at anykind.net, and Cross Record's intoxicating Be Good is streaming at bit.ly/be_good.
