Record Store Day

Falling as usual on the third Saturday in April (4/16), the vinyl nerd's favorite made-up holiday is celebrating its fifth year of celebrating independently owned record stores. This year's Record Store Day attempts a coup d'etat against what the organizers call "online retailers or corporate behemoths" with the help of more than 700 stores in the U.S. alone, and the festivities include promotional giveaways, in-store performances, and discounts—not to mention the ever-expanding catalog of RSD releases and reissues, many of them limited, very limited, or even supermegalimited. Around two dozen Chicago music merchants are participating this year. Get up early and get over to your local store—lines do form, and people do miss out.

As usual, Chicago labels are rolling out their own special releases. Thrill Jockey has three new LPs for Record Store Day: a Glenn Jones split with Charlie Parr & the Black Twig Pickers (see the List on Charlie Parr), a collaboration between Phil Manley (Trans Am, Fucking Champs) and Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless), and an Oval split with Liturgy. Bloodshot Records is releasing a live compilation commemorating the label's 15th-anniversary concert at the Hideout in 2009, which includes the Blacks, Bobby Bare Jr., the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, and Alejandro Escovedo. The in-house label at Permanent Records has pressed a split 12-inch EP by Purling Hiss and the Puffy Areolas in an edition of 750. Trouble in Mind has a four-way split of cover songs by Mean Jeans, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, the Wrong Words, and Jack Oblivian. And finally, archival label of superheroes the Numero Group is releasing a 17-track compilation of recordings recovered from Cleveland's Boddie Record Company and opening a pop-up shop in the Stop Smiling space at 1371 N. Milwaukee (9 AM-9 PM). The store will hawk Numero releases, including an exclusive 45 from the label's Eccentric Soul collection (limited to 100), as well as a lustworthy selection of used vinyl from the likes of Courtland Green and Dante Carfagna.

The list of RSD releases also includes a re-pressing of the debut Bad Brains seven-inch, Pay to Cum; a vinyl reissue of Deerhoof's Friend Opportunity; an absolutely epic picture disc of Dio's Killing the Dragon; new material from Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, Owen, and the Vivian Girls; live releases exclusive to Record Store Day by Off!, Television, and the Decemberists; Nirvana's Hormoaning EP and Sonic Youth's Whore's Moaning EP, both originally released in Australia; and an LP box set of the Flaming Lips' first five Warner Brothers albums.

Listed below are the participating stores in the city and near suburbs, each with the events, sales, giveaways, and performances it has planned. Call the stores or visit their websites for details; there's a complete list of special RSD releases and happenings at recordstoreday.com. —Kevin Warwick
