Steel Magnolias Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through July 31 2010

Those of us with pretensions of theatrical sophistication are supposed to hate Robert Harling's 1987 dramedy, in which six deep-fried, schematically diverse Louisiana women wax sassy and soggy on the vicissitudes of small-town life while hanging out at the local beauty parlor. And the shapeless, eventless first scene in this Hubris Productions staging goes a long way towards justifying disdain. But the members of Lavina Jadhwani's ingeniously subtle ensemble are so in synch that they gradually turn Harling's contrived plot and aphoristic dialogue into something that feels an awful lot like real life. They wisely underplay their characters' stereotypical quirks and focus instead on the intricacies of their shared histories, giving the evening layered emotional truths. --Justin Hayford
