Susanna Hoffs Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Tue., Nov. 6, 8 p.m. 2012

To release her first solo album in 16 years, Susanna Hoffs started her own label, Baroque Folk—whose name is similar to her description of her music. The music on Someday sounds more like baroque pop, though: Hoffs embeds her sugary melodies in multilayered arrangements that recall the bubblegum psychedelia of the late 60s, with strings, horns, and keyboards surrounding her honeyed, slightly scuffed voice. In recent years Hoffs has sounded revitalized, both with the reunited Bangles and in Sid n' Susie, her covers project with Matthew Sweet. But without a foil on hand to temper her sweetness, she can get cloying. I've enjoyed it in small doses, but listening to the whole album is a bit like scarfing a bag of marshmallows in one sitting. —Peter Margasak
