A Chicago small business owner (Vince Vaughn), sweating a deadline for a big deal, can't decide whether to tell his stressed-out partner and best friend (Kevin James) that the latter's wife (Winona Ryder) is cheating on him. Under the direction of Ron Howard, what promises to be a shitty comedy turns out to be neither shitty nor, exactly, a comedy: such stock situations as Vaughn hiding on a balcony to snap photographs of the illicit lovers deliver few laughs, but the ugly emotional mess is so respectfully handled that the story resonates far beyond its comic designs. Howard gets strong work from Vaughn and from Jennifer Connelly as his confused girfriend, though Ryder steals the movie as the angry, guilt-ridden wife. An egregious crowd-pleaser, Howard concludes with an overscaled inspirational moment between the buddies at a Blackhawks game, unaware perhaps that the story he's just told is wiser than that. With Channing Tatum, Amy Morton, and Queen Latifah.
