The Scenesters

Rated R 102 minutes 2011

This knowing parody of Los Angeles independent filmmaking recalls early features by Joe Dante (Hollywood Boulevard) and John Landis (Schlock): it's slapdash but eager to please, and the movie in-jokes aren't half-bad. An effete mumblecore director and his big-talking producer (who have just finished a movie called "Nothing Is Everything") decide to raise money for their next project by working as videographers on crime scene investigations; inevitably, they end up shooting a documentary about the hunt for a serial killer. Many of the cast and crew members have worked together for years making Internet videos, which accounts for both the strengths and weaknesses of this enterprise: the players exhibit an established group dynamic that's enjoyable to watch, but the story seems to have been conceived in three-to-five minute increments. Todd Berger directed his own script and plays the onscreen director as well.
