Ty Segall, Ex-Cult, Trin Tran Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Sold Out (Music) Soundboard

When: Sat., Feb. 9, 7 p.m. 2013

Ex-Cult’s self-titled debut LP, released in November on Goner, was produced by modern-day garage-rock master Ty Segall, but don’t go into it expecting Ty’s irresistible pop-garage-psych. What this Memphis band plays is bleak, dark punk rock, steeped in the nihilism and minor-key aggression of 80s west-coast hardcore. Atonal, noisy guitar leads and rough, muddy production amplify the record’s bad vibes and nearly push it into inaccessibility, but the creepy factor is part of its appeal. Given that one of the biggest acts in the scene is a bubblegum-pop band fronted by a man dancing around in skivvies and a furry bunny mask, Ex-Cult’s negative energy is a perverse breath of fresh air. —Luca Cimarusti Ty Segall headlines.
