Record Stores: Music Graveyards?

On Sunday the New York Times ran a story about the decline of the brick-and-mortar record store, suggesting that the customer base for old-fashioned CDs, purchased at old-fashioned cash registers, has largely been reduced to balding, gray-haired men in their 50s. While I don’t think there’s any doubt that the record shop has been on its way to obsolescence—a situation that makes me very sad, even if I can’t name more than two great stores in Chicago—I haven’t seen any evidence, either written or first-hand, that the state of affairs in this city is anywhere near as gloomy. Sales figures may be down, but on most of my semiregular visits to record stores I don’t exactly feel like I’m entering a ghost town.
