Robert Kosara at eagereyes.org tried mapping paths among zip codes in ascending numerical order, and got an interesting set of patterns. Tech geeks will want to read the whole thing, which discusses about other zip toys and how Kosara used them to produce this "scribble map."
Postal geeks such as myself will notice that Kosara's not from these parts: he imagines that the in-state patterns might be counties. Actually they are three-digit zip regions: the blob just west of Chicago is Rockford and its hinterland (zips start with 611), the smaller blob just south is Kankakee (609), across the Indiana line is Gary (463), and so forth. They couldn't be counties, as there are 102 in Illinois alone. But you knew that.
(By way of Information Aesthetics, which repeats the county error.)
