Fried chicken chat



Beginning January 15, the West Town Tavern is offering a $16.95 Monday night fried chicken special. On the plate: garlic mashed potatoes, sauteed Swiss chard, buttermilk biscuits in wild mushroom gravy, and half an organic, breaded, buttermilk-marinated bird (fried in trans-fat free canola oil, of course). Two months down the road, on March 11, chef Susan Goss and co. will celebrate this addition to the Monday night lineup with a special Sunday-night chicken dinner featuring guest of honor John T. Edge, author of Fried Chicken: An American Story (the first in the series whose other titles include Donuts and Apple Pie) and executive director of the Southern Foodways Alliance. Edge is also the author of Southern Belly: The Ultimate Food Lover's Companion to the American South, a drool-inducing ethnographic guide to the best barbecue, catfish, sweet potato pie, and (yep) fried chicken below the Mason-Dixon. Published in hardback in 2000, it's been out of print for the last few years but, happily, Algonquin's set to publish a long-overdue, heavily revised paperback edition this June.
