Radical pro-lifer and former Republican state representative Cal Skinner isn't the only one who scratched his head at Oprah's spending $40 million on a single school in Africa. By way of contrast, he points to the Northfield-based, church-related RISE International, whose work he describes at McHenry County Blog. The organization has raised $1.3 million and partnered with local churches to build 105 bare-bones schools in war-devastated rural Angola. Lynn Cole, one of the founders, says, "The schools we are building are about $12,500 apiece. They are in places where there is no electricity, no running water. The local village builds outhouses for the use of the schools."
