A big week for bakeries

Between paczki day yesterday and the opening of Pasticerria Natalina this weekend it was easy to overlook the reopenings of two farmer's market stalwarts whose storefront operations had been on hiatus.

Bleeding Heart Bakery, home of "punk rock pastry," closed the first week of January for a major overhaul which includes an expanded selection of soups and sandwiches, a brunch menu, espresso machine, and a section devoted exclusively to truffles and other chocolates. It's now up and running again at 2018 W. Chicago, 773-278-3638. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 7 AM-7 PM, and Sunday 8 AM-6 PM.

When Golden Rise Bakery's Oak Park building was set to be demolished, the family-run operation picked up and moved to Logan Square, where it built a following at the neighborhood's farmers market last year.  Like Bleeding Heart it offers organic breads, all-natural pastries, and some veg- and vegan-friendly items, as well as soups, sandwiches, quiches, fair trade coffees, ice cream, shakes, and smoothies. The doors are already open but this Saturday from they're holding a "ribbon cutting ceremony" presided over by 35th Ward incumbent alderman Rey Colon; there'll also be refreshments and drawings for free lunches and pastries. The new shop is at 2957 W. Diversey, 773-772-7620; it's open Tuesday-Sunday, 7 AM–7 PM.
