The following are screen captures of the main headlines regarding the Conrad Black trial in four papers, taken between 12:30 PM and 1 AM on the morning of the day after it began. See if you can spot the differences!
Chicago Tribune, Chicago, USA
Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago, USA
National Post, Toronto, Canada
Toronto Star, Toronto, Canada
Incidentally, the proximity of the Black trial to the headline "Couple downsizes after 35 years in Palatine" just kills me, for existential reasons. If newspapers die and we all end up reading specialized blogs that cater to our own obsessions, the news will be much more efficient, but that sort of eloquent, resonant juxtaposition will be lost forever. Every daily newspaper is, ultimately, Audenesque:
About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters; how well, they understood
Its human position; how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;
In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster....
