The Green City Market's Localvore Challenge kicks off today, and I had every intention of diving in, picking up the flag, wearing the button . . . you name it. Except the weekend flew by in a flurry of commitments, pleasant and un-, and, of course, I never made it to the grocery store. Let alone the farmers' market. So now I'm looking at an empty pantry and three days on deadline fueled by the Reader trifecta of Chipotle, Star, and Hen. So much for immersion journalism.

If anything, it proves that the biggest challenge sustainably minded eaters face isn't the absence of local wheat or rotting root vegetables--it's time. So much so that, in fact, I barely have time to write a stirring manifesto affirming that changing our eating habits is only the tip of the sustainability iceberg and that what's really at issue is the ever accelerating, toxic, out-of-whack pace of winner-take-all Western civilization.

But, if anyone out there is doing the challenge, let us know how it goes. If you want to bring me some locally produced cheese to go with the last tomatoes from the garden, I'll be at the office.
