The White Stripes have canceled their fall tour due to Meg White's "acute anxiety," and as you might imagine, fan reaction has been a little explosive. Even the peanut gallery at the Huffington Post got some digs in.
Needless to say, canceling the entire tour, as opposed to rescheduling a few shows here and there and keeping an eye on her condition, has generated some cynical rumors, not to mention a good, justifiable bit of "bzuh?" Searching for mental illness in the rock scene is like looking for hay in a haystack; the culture expects people to suck it up and go on until they inevitably snap and take it out on some poor hotel room that just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That said, anxiety sucks. If this is for real, and the terror in White's head is actually worse than the dread of losing a truckload of money and fan respect, I say "You go girl" for seeing the wall fast approaching and swerving away rather than trying to drive right through it. I hope she's in treatment and I hope it helps. On the other hand, if it turns out to be drama-queen code for something less sympathetic . . . well, at least she's kept her panties on in public.
